Are you a Jill of all trades and master of none? I know firsthand how easy it is to get caught up doing everything in your business. This week, delegation has been highlighted as a leadership style. If you look at successful business models used by solopreneurs, you will find delegation as an active function. You might wonder why delegation is key to success with multitasking on trend. Have you thought about how much money multitasking is costing your business?
Delegation Adds Value
First of all, calculate your hourly rate; let’s say your hourly charge rate is maybe $25 (for arguments sake). If you’re a creative type, like me, any task away from your core focus is going to work against you. Let’s say you’re creating content for your Facebook Page. It’s incredibly easy to spend hours upon hours looking at other pages for inspiration. You could also probably spend hours reading online content worthy of sharing from various social media platforms. As a result, you will have spent in excess of $500 of your time when delegation of this task could have cost less.
Stay Focused On Your Craft
It is key to remember your purpose in business and what your craft is. After all, the reason you are in business (particularly if you sell a skill set and not goods) if for you to work in the business. Whilst my core focus is human resources and business consulting, the requests for support haven’t stopped within those realms. Whilst I have experience and an interest in these areas, I’ve always stayed firm in maintaining my core focus. Distractions may add fuel to your creativity and innovation to your process though may cost the quality of your work.
Have you considered collaborating with peers on tasks where a combined skill set would benefit your overall goal? Whilst this isn’t hardcore delegation, it’s a great option for those of us that enjoy being part of the process. A great place for you to form collaborative connections is at networking events. You’ll gain new skills and likely form business relationships that will keep on giving and as a result, your business will flourish.
Above all, incorporating delegation of tasks into your business model adds in more ways than cost efficiency as you will also create opportunities for our business. How has delegation helped you succeed in your business?
