If you think vision boards are more useless than a screen door on a submarine, then the joke’s on you. They work, and there’s actually a really simple explanation of why they work so well for so many people.
Creating a personal and sacred space that displays what you want, actually does bring it to life. What we focus on expands. It activates the part in our brain that helps it search for actual opportunities in reality. ” desire a yellow car, see yellow cars EVERYWHERE”. When you create a vision board and place it in a space where you see it often, you essentially end up doing short visualization exercises throughout the day, on almost a subconscious level.
Daily visualization is one of the easiest, quickest and most powerful mind exercises you can do. According to the popular book The Secret, “The law of attraction is forming your entire life experience and it is doing that through your thoughts. When you are visualizing, you are emitting a powerful frequency out into the Universe.”
Whether you believe that or not, we know, without a doubt, that visualization works. High performing athletes have been using it for decades to improve performance, and a Psychology Website has reported that the brain patterns activated when a weightlifter lifts heavyweights are also similarly activated when the lifter just imagined (visualized) lifting weights. Don’t cancel your gym membership just yet though …..
So, what’s the big secret to creating a vision board that works?
It ’s actually really simple: Your vision board should focus on how you want to feel, not just on things that you want. Don’t get me wrong, it’s great to include the material stuff, too. ( hello private island ) However, the more your board focuses on how you want to feel, the more it will come to life. Include words and images that invoke a strong positive feeling for you.
There is only one major rule to creating a vision board that works, and it’s that there aren’t any rules. You aren’t going to mess it up.
STEP 1. SET THE MOOD
Some calming music, a few girlfriends, wine, some candles, incense, a quiet place, or maybe even meditating first … Whatever floats your boat and gets you in the zone, do that … do not attempt to do this while studying for an exam or making school lunches, this is your time, set time aside, do it properly.
STEP 2. GET YOUR S**T TOGETHER
Gather your supplies, magazines, printed images from your multiple fantasy Pinterest boards, scissors, glue, glitter, postcards, photos, scissors, glue, badass motivational quotes, … and of course the board … with doesn’t literally have to be aboard, you can use a piece of card, a pinboard, a photo frame, an entire wall in your bedroom … whatever suits you .. go for it!
STEP 3. SET YOUR GOALS
Sometimes the goal setting can be a bit overwhelming. I find the easiest way is this … set a timer for 5 minutes. Pretend that your 5 and this piece of paper is magic, literally anything you write down will appear or happen to you …. There is no judgment, there is no should, just start writing, let it all flow out to be as messy or as neat as you like, there are NO wrong answers …. Ok go….
STEP 4. COLLECT VISUAL REPRESENTATIONS OF YOUR GOALS
Get specific, If you want to make 200k this year, print yourself a bank slip and fill it out paying yourself 200k, If you want to own a white range rover, print it off…. You know the one with the super-hot rims, print it, honey! If you want to complete a marathon, print of the logo or pictures of people at the finish line. Or if you’ve always wanted to visit bora bora go online, plan the holiday and print of the pictures of the most amazing hotel you’re going to stay at one day … GET SPECIFIC AND HAVE FUN!
STEP 5. CREATE A COLLAGE
It doesn’t have to be pretty or perfect, heck it doesn’t even have to make sense to anyone else … this is JUST for you!
STEP 6. HANG IT UP
Preferably somewhere you are going to see it multiple times a day. So, your bedroom wall when you wake up, your office, your fridge the back of your toilet door, where you are going to see it the most. Make sure you spend a moment each day looking at your vision board truly visualizing and feeling how amazing it will be when you have achieved it all !!! FEEL IT ALL!
STEP 7. START WORKING TOWARDS THOSE GOALS, HONEY !!!
