It’s both exciting and incredibly challenging when setting out to start your own business. When I launched my business Relauncher just over 8 years ago, my background was in Corporate Marketing for a variety of Blue Chip companies throughout Australia and the UK. Whilst I had extensive experience in this area, setting out to start my business was so much tougher than I had ever imagined. I had no idea how many hours would be required and how determined I was going to have to be to make my dream a reality.
I launched the business as an Online Shop, which then completely evolved into a Business Coaching practice by year 3! I certainly hadn’t seen that coming when I first started out. Throughout the past 8 years in Business, I have been taken on an incredible journey and have learned several key lessons along the way.
Below are 4 elements which would have been really beneficial to know when I first started my own business:
Remain flexible in your approach
Tony Robbins quote, “stay committed to your decisions but stay flexible in your approach” could not be truer. You will need to be devoted to your goal although flexible enough to allow for different ways of achieving this goal. What I can safely say as a Business Coach having worked with all kinds of businesses, is that most businesses evolve quite dramatically by their third year.
When we first start we can become consumed with targeting our marketing and directing all of our focus on to our ideal clients and customers. However, it is not until our business gains enough traction that we can fully understand exactly what they want and need from us. With this comes a lot of trial and error, adjusting, and refining. Adjusting and re-adjusting by listening to feedback and learning what works and what doesn’t is such an effective means of growing your business.
Patience is a virtue
This could not be truer in the process of getting your new business up and running. Even if you have an outstanding product or service, your business is a long-term commitment that you will need to be dedicated to even after the initial excitement wears off.
It absolutely goes hand-in-hand with patience and is vital to remain persistent despite any challenges you will inevitably face. In order to become a well-established and respected business which stands the test of time, you’ll need unwavering dedication, persistence, and patience. Successful businesses are built over time, not overnight.
Trust your gut & follow your intuition
When first starting out, it’s easy to doubt yourself and your abilities. During the early stages of business, it’s crucial to dig your heels in and stand strong in your pursuit of an incredible business. Yes, there will be challenges. Yes, you will probably feel like giving up.
I recommend you follow your gut and trust that in the end, all will work out. I have learned that it is easy to doubt our decision-making skills but at the end of the day, it is best practice to seek advice, then act with integrity and listen to your intuition. It may sound cliché, but it will never lead you astray.
There will never be enough time in the day
Even if you have time-management practices, systems, processes and dedicated staff, there will always be something more to do as a business owner. As we care so deeply about our businesses, it is so easy to get stuck thinking about what needs to be done and what more can be done.
