Team building events get a bad rap lately because they seem like something that an HR department does with no real purpose or goal. However, this doesn’t have to be the case. Team buildings can help a small business to create stronger ties between the employees, and consequently become more productive.
If a team building event is organized with the needs and interests of the employees in mind, it can become a useful tool a company can use to become even better.
Why are you creating it?
The first thing to do is to know why you’re organizing the event in the first place. The gathering should serve a purpose for the company, and accomplish something that can later be easily noticeable in business. This requires discussing things with the management and the workers alike.
For instance, if the problem with your company is about communication, then the event should be organized around improving it. If the company has a managerial issue, you should create an event that makes it better in that particular way.
Make it fun
These events are usually mandatory to participate in. That creates a weird atmosphere sometimes because it’s hard to relax when you know you have to do something, and that your job can depend on it. In order to avoid this pressure and make the event more comfortable, you should make sure there are lots of fun activities.
The problem obviously comes with the fact that not everyone sees fun the same way. That’s why you need to discuss the event with everyone who is going to be involved, and in that way, you can create something enjoyable for everyone (as much as its possible to do so).
Take a short trip
Sometimes just moving away from day to day tasks of the office and taking some time to reflect can help your team become better connected, and simply more effective. It doesn’t really matter what you will do on the trip just as long as it represents a change of pace from what you are used to.

Have a schedule
In order to make the trip more memorable and better organized, you should make sure that there’s a schedule that organizes your activities for the duration thereof. The schedule doesn’t have to go into details of every hour of your time, but it should provide enough activities for everyone to be occupied during the event.
At least a portion of the time should be left to the employees to figure out the situation on their own. This is especially important if you’re traveling for the event because that way they can explore the place they are visiting.
Ask for reviews
Every event needs to be better than the one before. Basically, that’s the only way to keep them interesting enough for everyone to attend, and to get something out of them. One of the ways of doing this is to ask those who have already participated in their opinions and ideas.
The suggestions should be carefully studied, and later used to make the next event better suited to those who should benefit from them the most – the employees. The reviews are best done anonymously, and they should cover pretty much every part of the event.
Team buildings can be useful, but you need to make an effort in order to make them such. By trying to shake things up every now and then, and by listening to your employees on the matter, you will keep your workers happy and productive, and ensure a more successful and profitable business at the same time.
